The Verkhovna Rada Committee for Youth and Sport has commented on the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee by examining the situation in detail.

“We strongly condemn this position and regard this decision as open support of the aggressor states in the context of the barbaric war unleashed by the Russian Federation against the Ukrainian people,” the statement said.

“Furthermore, this decision is a manifestation of disregard for Ukrainian athletes who, despite the war, personal losses and a difficult psychological state, continue to represent Ukraine with dignity at international competitions. Russian murderers and terrorists have no moral right to take part in prestigious competitions and receive medals while their country violates all possible norms of morality and international law,” the MPs said.

The committee adds that it continues to develop proposals on sanctions against athletes and sports functionaries from Russia and other states. We are talking, in particular, about members of international sports federations who allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions.

“In addition, the Ukrainian MPs … suggest that the states where international sports competitions will be held do not issue visas to Russian and Belarusian athletes, coaches and sports functionaries. The committee calls on the International Olympic Committee to adhere to its commitments to the international sports community and not to give offending countries tools to whitewash their reputation,” the statement adds.
