In framework of permanent co-operation with United Nations’ bodies our Association sent submission to the thematic report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, Dr. Astrid Puentes Riaño, to the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly.
That ARC’s submission, prepared by Dr. Borys Babin, Dr. Andrii Chvaliuk, Dr. Anna Prykhodko and other experts and published at UN web-sources now, described negative inpact of Russian aggression against Ukraine on global, regional and national framework of implementation the human right to healthy environment and relevant discussions, held on sessions of Strategic Forum “Future of Crimea”.
ARC’s submission reminds on corresponding negative impacts of Russian aggression against climate include atmospheric pollution due to mass extensive emissions of combustion products, the destruction of thousands of square kilometers of forests and plantations near frontline, as well as natural soils in the combat zone close to the Crimea, the intervention of the Russian occupiers in the melioration management and natural watercourses in Southern Ukraine.
ARC’s submisison stresses that the deliberate destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam by the Russian forces in 2022 is an example of a war crime with such genocidal implications and also is an ecocidal act, and also the violation of the human right to a healthy environment.
Association reminded to UN officials that Russian central authorities, military structures, illegal “governments” in Crimea and Henichesk disseminate system of fakes regarding events with destruction the Kakhovka HPP, violating right to information on healthy environment.
ARC’s submisison added that inegative climate changes are not the side effect of Russian aggression against Ukraine, but it is one of its major goals. As it is known the administration of Russian president use in the propaganda narratives that the global warming and ocean level rise are allegedly useful for Russia as such situation will allegedly allow to develop actively the natural resources of Russia-controlled northern part of Eurasia.
So damage connected with climate changes, caused by Russian aggression, is committed by Russia-controlled structures with direct intent and include relevant disinformation and misinformation campaigns, ARC’s submisison added.
ARC’s submisison proposed again to UN structures and member states the inclusion of relevant challenges, connected with Russian aggression, in international documents of legal and political dimensions, in particular for development the ecocide conventional criminalization, for increase the sanctions pressure and for common international recognition of the Russian regime as terrorist one.
