On May 8, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the Address to the governments and parliaments of foreign countries, international organizations, and parliamentary assemblies in connection with the 80th anniversary of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people. The appeal contains gratitude to the parliaments of Latvia, Lithuania and Canada for passing decisions on recognizing the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people from Crimea as genocide.
The appeal states that the Russia’s war against the Ukrainian people is a continuation of genocidal practices aimed at destroying Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar identity, erasing their historical and cultural heritage and identity. The document emphasizes that the only tool for the full restoration of the rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatar people is the de-occupation and reintegration of the AR of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
The appeal contains a call to the countries of the world to recognize the large-scale, unprovoked armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine as a continuation of Russia’s genocidal imperial policy, the goal of which is to colonize Ukraine, enslave the Ukrainian people, punish Ukrainians for striving to build a modern, successful democratic state, for the civilizational choice to be part of United Europe.
The document also calls on the countries of the world to actively participate in activities within the framework of the International Crimean Platform at the governmental and parliamentary levels with the aim of ending Russia’s occupation of Crimea and the entire occupied territory of Ukraine in order to fully restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
