In the framework of permanent cooperation with the United Nations’ structures and officials, our Association sent a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, Astrid Puentes Riaño, for preparation of her next thematic report on planning and the right to the environment.
This input, prepared by Eduard Pleshko, Andrii Chvaliuk, and other experts and published on the UN official web-sources now, reminded the Special Rapporteur of the environmental challenges caused by the occupation of Crimea and by the other forms of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The ARC’s input reminded the UN officials of the environmental, land, water, and waste challenges in the occupied areas of the South of Ukraine, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov, the negative impact of the Russia-committed destruction of the dam of Kakhovka HPP on Dnipro, and the catastrophe with Russian shadow fleet tankers “Volgoneft-212” and “Volgoneft-239,” etc.
Illegal campaigns of “confiscation” of the agricultural land plots, gardens, and vineyards, committed by the Crimean “authorities,” were also described.
The ARC’s input again described the relevant application processes and relevant damages for collective rights of Indigenous Crimean Tatar People, including the right to sustainable development, right to land, and environmental rights, initiated by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
The ARC’s input stressed separate attention to the Ukrainian strategic and program documents adopted on issues of processes of reintegration of Crimea after its de-occupation that included environmental issues; relevant proposals of the Strategic Forum “Future of Crimea” were also described.
