In framework of permanent cooperation with UN bodies our Association informed the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in framework of preparation the Secretary-General’s synthesis report on actionable solutions, challenges and barriers relevant to a just transition and the full realization of human rights to healthy environment for all people, to be submitted to the Human Rights Council.
ARC’s submission, prepared by Professor Borys Babin and other experts, and published at official UN web-sources now, reminded to UN that Russia-controlled troops and mercenaries committed in Ukraine, during ongoing invasion, gross violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights’ law already, including broad crimes against environment, attacks on forests, dams, national parks, riparian and maritime ecosystems, also as against Ukrainian agricultural enterprises.
ARC’s submission stressed on gross challenges for the issue of sustainable development, caused by destruction of the dam of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant on Dnipro River by Russian military units. Submission reminded that Russian central authorities, military structures, illegal “governments” in Crimea and Henichesk disseminated system of fakes regarding events with destruction the Kakhovka HPP and next catastrophe of Russian tankers “Volgoneft-212” and “Volgoneft-239” with next Black Sea pollution by fuel oil.
ARC’s submission reminded that since 2018 Ukrainian authorities adopted some strategic and program documents regarding processes of reintegration of the Crimea after its de-occupation that included analysis of just transition, climate changes and climate challenges.
Submission added that Russia-committed international ecological crimes present a new phenomenon for victims of such criminal acts, including issues like damage recovery, special challenge to collective rights of territorial communities and indigenous peoples, most affected by such crimes that include their right to access to information. Our Association’s cooperation with UN bodies on those issues will be continued.
