As we informed earlier, this January, regarding the current maritime ecological disaster in Black Sea, caused by Russian tanker fleet activities and broadscale fuel oil pollution, our Association addressed relevant submissions to democratic states’ national agencies, responsible for sanctions.
In our submissions we proposed to enforce relevant sanctions activities against the Russian tanker fleet, its owners and beneficiaries, connected insurance bodies and classification societies, including “Russian Maritime Register of Shipping” and “Russian classification society”, formerly “Russian River Register”.
We informed sanction bodies as about frauds with tanker classification documents, that allowed Russian tankers, which are not in compliance with maritime safety, security and environmental demands, make new risks for shipping, infrastructure and ecosystems, so about illegal activities of “Russian Maritime Register of Shipping” and “Russian classification society” at Russia-occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Crimea.
We already got relevant next communication with the sanctions units of the European Commission, Australian and New Zealand governments. For example, the official response from Sanctions Unit Legal Division for New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, stressed on January 28 on awareness of the recent oil spill off southwestern Crimea, resulting from the sinking of two Russian tankers.

New Zealand officials stress that their state is clear in its condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Given the role that Russia’s exports of fossil fuels has in funding its aggression, they stressed concerns about Russia’s shadow fleet activities aimed at evading international sanctions, including the G7-plu price cap on Russian origin oil.
Consistent with these concerns, New Zealand is an active member of the G7-plus price cap coalition and last year, New Zealand joined the United Kingdom-led “Shadow Fleet” Call to Action, those officials added. Our Association’s activities in that direction will be continued.
