On January 25 expert of our Association, Professor Borys Babin, upon relevant invitation, took part in the special International Roundtable on Education, Children’s Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals, hosted online jointly by the Voices of Future Generations Initiative, in partnership with the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), and experts from the University of Cambridge.
The aims of that International Roundtable were to raise awareness about children’s rights, bring attention to Sustainable Development Goal 4 and reflect on the role of education in building more inclusive, peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. Event gathered educators, youth leaders, indigenous leaders and advocates, mentors and experts on intergenerational equity, children’s rights and sustainable development for an interactive dialogue to raise awareness and speak up for education, peace, justice, children’s rights and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For example relevant issues were highlighted by Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger, an international expert in policy, law and governance on climate change, biodiversity, human rights, trade, investment and financial law and the world’s SDGs from University of Cambridge.
During Roundtable Dr. Borys Babin informed participants on our Association’s researches on challenges for education during international armed conflicts and foreign intervention and occupation, including militarisation, hate speech, indoctrination, deportation and discrimination, on examples of Russian aggression and occupation of the Ukrainian territories, including the Crimea.
Expert Babin described to participants on ARC’s previous submissions, devoted to SDGs issues, also as indigenous rights, on examples of education for Crimean Tatars in the Crimea and other foreign-controlled Ukrainian territory, in conditions of ongoing conflict and environmental challenges.
Professor Babin stressed that research of core challenges for SDGs in education must include the international conflicts situation, including international criminal and humanitarian law demands.
