In early January, the so-called “Crimean hydrometeorology department” announced that “the average annual air temperature on the peninsula for the period 1991-2020 was +11.8°C, one degree higher than the previous 30-year period.”
It stated that the average temperature in July rose by one and a half degrees, to +23.4°C,
and the average temperature in the coldest month, January, increased by one degree, to +1.2°C.
Meanwhile, occupier-controlled media cite Alexei Karnaukhov, a climatologist from the “Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research”, as saying that “global warming and the worldwide melting of glaciers threaten to turn the Crimean Peninsula into an island.”
“Crimea could turn into an island. Areas near the Azov and Baltic Seas, including St. Petersburg, will be flooded. Siberia is also at risk; many oil and gas producing areas will be submerged. But the Moscow region and its surrounding areas will remain above ground, even if all the glaciers melt and the sea level rises by approximately seventy meters,” Karnaukhov asserts.
It should be noted that the aggressor’s propaganda previously disseminated counter-narratives from the Kremlin, claiming that “global warming” is supposedly “beneficial for Russia” because it “will allow for more efficient use of Arctic resources” and “increase land area.” “engaged in agricultural production.”
The “change of direction” in the aggressor’s position may have a simple explanation: the aggressor’s oil and gas sector is shrinking, and oil prices are falling.
Now Russia will clearly try to speculate on the global warming issues, including on international platforms, with the goal of “stabilizing” and raising energy prices.
