In September 2020, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe admitted in his interview with theleading media “Nikkei”, that the attempt to annex Crimea was a real reason for the failure to sign thepeace agreement following World War II, preparations for the conclusion of which between Russia and Japan lasted a decades. The seizure of Crimea caused the new wave of global tensions, particularlybetween Russia and the United States, which made impossible to conclude the Russian-Japanesepeace treaty, Abe said.
