NATO should be strengthened and money channelled at deterrence, including of Russia, US DefenceSecretary Dr. Mark T. Esper said, as reported by DOD Public Affairs Office. He also mentioned Russia’soccupation of Crimea and military activity in Donbas.
According to the Defence Secretary, NATO’s spending increase is welcome, and the money has to bechannelled into capabilities aimed at deterrence.
‘We need to deter Russia. We need to strengthen NATO and, again, enhance our partners as we lookforward,’ he said.
Russia is a slightly lesser challenge than China, but it is a worldwide troublemaker — annexingCrimea, fighting a war in Ukraine, threatening NATO allies, and sending troops to Syria and Libya, Dr.Esper said.
