On May 1, the Kyiv Aviation Institute hosted the forum “Architecture of International Security”, in which experts from our Association actively participated in the panel “Maritime Security: Challenges, Countermeasures, Dynamics”, moderated by Professor Borys Babin.
In his report, ARC expert Associate Professor Eduard Pleshko outlined his vision for countering the aggressor’s provocations related to the operation of submarine cables and pipelines, in particular in the Black Sea region, and highlighted the illegal activities of relevant Russian structures, such as the “Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research”.
Expert Oleksii Plotnikov also pointed out the dynamics of modern approaches to international humanitarian law in the context of the use of maritime drones and pointed to the international crimes committed by the aggressor against maritime security and the environment.
In turn, the editor-in-chief of the portal “BlackSeaNews” Andrii Klymenko focused on the challenges to maritime security related to the activities of the Russian shadow fleet and the general global degradation of maritime security caused by the destructive activities of the aggressor and terrorist structures affiliated with it.
And the director of the Institute of National Security, Bohdan Ustymenko, reported on the dynamics of the Ukrainian regulatory framework in the field of maritime security and on countering criminal attempts by Russia to annex Ukrainian spaces in the Black and Azov Seas.
In his own comments, Professor Babin focused on the dimension of maritime safety in the context of merchant shipping and highlighted the aggressor’s attempts to erode it through the systematic use of fake information from Russian-controlled classification societies, “insurance structures” and the fraudulent use of third-country flags.
The reports of the panel participants sparked a lively discussion among the audience, which was joined by online experts of our Association, Andrii Chvaliuk and Anna Prykhodko.
