On July 9, expert of our Association Professor Borys Babin took online participation in the lecture by Serhii Plokhii, Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University, “Atoms for Peace at the Time of War: Lessons from the Frontlines of Ukraine,” moderated by Serhiy Bilenky from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta.
The lecture, held by Harvard University, was based on Plokhii’s most recent book, “Chernobyl Roulette,” published in 2024. It was a searching account of the extraordinary events inside the plant, connected with Russian broad-scale aggression against Ukraine and caused by the temporal Russian occupation of Chernobyl NPP.
This book also mentioned an even much more dangerous situation developed at the Zaporizhzhya NPP in southern Ukraine, the largest such facility in Europe. In this lecture, Serhii Plokhii discusses the challenges that the Russian takeover of the nuclear sites presents to the world, stressing that we must face up to a new reality: there has already been warfare at two nuclear sites, and others are vulnerable.
In the framework of discussion, Dr. Babin initiated such topics as the illegal Russian nuclear activities at Sevastopol, including the illegal “Sevastopol State University” and relevant occupiers’ provocations with the reactor located in Sevastopol, as well as with the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Our Association reported to authorized international bodies and agencies about those Russian crimes and provocations before, and our work in exposuring those provocations for the international community will be continued.
