On June 6 our Association’s expert Professor Borys Babin, upon organizers’ invitation, took online participation in the Roundtable on War Pollution, organized by the European Union’s Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea.
During the Roundtable, Ukrainian scientists and officials discussed challenges of Russian naval aggression against the environment with the representative of the Maritime Regional Cooperation and Maritime Security Department General of the European Commission, Christos Economou, as well as with the official of the European Maritime Safety Agency, Giuseppe Russo.
Among other challenges, war-related impact on navigation and shipping in the Black Sea was discussed, as well as EU projects as a means to enhance the standards for maritime safety and marine pollution prevention and response in the Black Sea.
During the relevant discussion, Professor Babin disseminated for participants publications about activities of our Association, connected with initiating the international organizations’ reaction to the catastrophe of Russian “Volgoneft” tankers near Kerch Strait in December 2024, reported on relevant results, and reminded on illegal and destructive activities on Russian classification societies in their environmental impact.
