The Amazon has been fined $134,000 for violating US sanctions related to supplying goods to Iran, Syria and occupied Crimea.
According to the Enforcement Release published on the official website of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”), a Seattle, Washington-based company that provides retail, ecommerce, and digital services to millions of customers worldwide, has agreed to pay $134,523 to settle its potential civil liability for apparent violations of multiple OFAC sanctions programs’.
In 2011-2018, Amazon provided goods and services to persons located in the sanctioned region or countries of Crimea, Iran, and Syria. Amazon also provided services to individuals located in or employed by the foreign missions of countries sanctioned by OFAC.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the violations occurred because Amazon’s automated processes failed to fully analyse all transaction and customer data. The Department says the company has voluntary disclosed the violations and agreed to pay the fine.
