As the member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Eskender Bariev, reported on July 17, he and the expert of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center Lyudmila Korotkikh began work at the 16th annual Session of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The session began with the discussion of the draft Study “The impact of militarization on the rights of Indigenous Peoples”, and representatives of the Crimean Tatars held a protest action, which clearly attracted the attention of not only the Mechanism members, but also of many representatives of the world’s indigenous peoples.
After all, as Korotkyh pointed out, in the research project there is no mention of the situation of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people in the conditions of full-scale Russian aggression, and this despite the fact that the Crimean Tatar Resource Center sent two submissions to the UN as part of this research. We will add that our Association also submitted a report to the Mechanism as part of the preparation of this Study.
In his speech, Eskender Bariiev pointed out that the Study “The impact of militarization on the rights of Indigenous Peoples” cannot be called objective, because Russian military aggression is called “the conflict in Ukraine” in it, it is not noted that Russia does not comply with the decision of the International Court of Justice to lift the ban on the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people.
Bariiev noted that the report lacks information that violent mobilization in Russia is mainly experienced by representatives of the indigenous peoples of the Caucasus, Buryatia, Siberia and the Urals, and also that representatives of the Crimean Tatar people in occupied Crimea became its victims, which led to the mass emigration of men to third countries.
The member of the Mejlis called on the Expert Mechanism to take into account these comments in the Study, and wished Ukrainian diplomats additional activity.
