On September 9, our Association expert Borys Babin took part in a meeting (strategic session) of the Advisory Council of the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Affairs and Freedom of Conscience on the implementation of the Law “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine” held in Kiyv.
“We have many challenges related to the implementation of the Law … Our task is to translate the discussions into practical steps and fill the law with specific regulatory legal acts that will allow it to actually work,” said the head of the State Ethnopolicy Viktor Yelensky.
Member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Eskender Bariiev in his report focused on the need to adopt a number of regulatory legal acts, without which the implementation of the law remains incomplete.
According to him, at least 17 such documents should be developed, two of which have already been adopted. In addition, it is necessary to amend the current specialized laws of Ukraine in accordance with the Law “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine,” Bariiev said.
Based on the results of the meeting, taking into account the opinions expressed by representatives of public structures of the Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks, as well as invited expert witnesses, including Professor Babin, the participants decided to create an organizing committee for the organization and holding of the Congress of Indigenous Peoples in Ukraine.
