On February, 6, upon the organisers’ invitation, ARC’s expert Dr. Borys Babin and PhD Anna Prikhodko took online participation in Roundtable “COP29 Insights Exchange”, held by Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law in National University of Singapore and devoted to issues of 29th United Nations Climate Change conference, that was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024.
During the Roundtable Professor Rose-Liza Eisma-Osorio from University of Cebu, Dr. Beatriz Garcia from Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Dr. Linda Yanti Sulistiawati from Universitas Gadjah Mada presented results of Baku Conference and discussions on such critical topics, as the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance, updates to Nationally Determined Contributions, and other key developments that emerged during COP29.
In his turn Professor Borys Babin described to Roundtable participants the conflict-related challenges of climate changes for indigenous rights and for sustainable development, on the example of Russian aggression and occupation of the Crimea.
ARC’s expert also described to the event organisers his own experience upon participation in COP29 activities, including the side-event “Russian Aggression, Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: Crimea Dimension” held in Ukrainian Pavilion of COP-29 on November, 21.
Those issues covered relevant discussions on compensations for the damage and losses, connected with Russia’s attacks against climate in Ukraine, and on Russian illegal maritime activities, including the transfer of oil and other kinds of carbon fuel, that created new challenges in area of climate change and violate brutally as Paris Agreement, so the international maritime law.
