On October, 4 ARC expert Borys Babin took active pacticipation on side-event “Enhancing the Rule of Law through Whistleblowers Protection”, organised by Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety on OSCE Warsaw Human Dimension Conference 2024.
On that event organisers brougt attention to the vital role of whistleblowers in upholding democracy and exposing illicit activities that threaten the public interest. The event provided a comprehensive understanding of how legal frameworks can fortify member states against corruption and facilitate the exposure of wrongdoing through whistleblowing, and highlighting the importance of providing them with robust legal protections and support.
Organisers of event, Azerbaijani journalist and human rights activist Emin Huseynov and American lawyer Stephen Martin Kohn, one of the top experts in whistleblower protection law, gave example of “Binance Holdings Limited”, the entity, that operates the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and was noticed in violation of sanctions, established for Crimea and North Korea and later has agreed to pay over $4 billion to resolve the relevant U.S. Justice Department’s investigation.
During communication with event participants and discussing Stephen Kohn’s “Rules for Whistleblowers: A Handbook for Doing What’s Right” Professor Babin reminded on examle of aggressor’s “International Settlement Bank” from Tskhinvali, with illegal activities in Russia-occupied territories of Ukraine, that is under U.S. sanctions since this September.
