On July 30, our Association’s expert Borys Babin took part as a speaker in the press conference “Implementation of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine: Interim Results” held by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.
At this event in “Kyivinform”, representatives of the Center Eskender Bariiev and Liudmila Korotkykh, as well as the Head of the Department of the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience Viktor Kovrei discussed the problems and interim results of the implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine”, the processes of consolidating the status of a representative body of indigenous peoples under the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
Also, during the press conference, the manual “Ukrainian Legislation on Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine: Questions and Answers” was presented, prepared with the participation of experts from our Association.
In his speech, Professor Babin focused on the international significance of Ukraine’s legalization of the Mejlis and emphasized that all responsibility for further steps to introduce the representative body of the Crimean Tatar people into budgetary, administrative, and economic relations in a legal and transparent manner now lies with the leadership of the Mejlis, and therefore the expert activity in this dimension of the specialists of the Center and the Association was completed after the approval in April of the relevant prescript of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
The Association’s expert also described the state of affairs in the European Court of Human Rights regarding the ban on the Mejlis by the aggressor and the persecution by Russia of participants in the Crimean Tatar self-government structures. Attention was also drawn to the participation of representatives of the Crimean Tatar people in UN bodies, in particular within the framework of peacebuilding initiatives of indigenous peoples.
