On June 26-27, Crimean Tatar activist and friend of our Association Lia Gazi (Motrechko) participated as a speaker in the Global Assembly of the Youth Democracy Network in Panama City under the slogan “Democratic Leadership: Built by Generations, Led by the Next”
During the Assembly, experts shared their perspectives in high-level panel discussions and intergenerational roundtables, connecting with over a hundred of the emerging leaders to expand pathways for youth participation in public life and strengthen democratic resilience.
During the work in the Assembly, Lia Gazi discussed with experts issues of supporting Crimean Tatars’ resilience against occupation, our Association’s activities and investigations’ results, and also the issues of international crimes and gross human rights violations committed by Russians, also as the sanction policy aspects.
Issues of countering the lifting of sanctions on Russian Crimea-connected officials, of countering circumvention of sanctions by Russian oligarchs, challenges of the delay and incompleteness of sanctions packages, including pro-Russian lobbying from certain states, and illegal continuation of the third states’ business activities in the Crimea, relevant challenges of aggressor’s drones and artificial intelligence development and usage were discussed.
Separate attention was devoted to issues of repression and racial discrimination of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people by the Russian regime, with special attention to aspects of the legalization of the Mejlis and to relevant international legal proceedings.
