On September 26, at the invitation of the organizers of the VIII Kharkiv International Legal Forum, our Association’s expert Borys Babin took an active part in the panel discussions “Legal protection of the environment in the conditions of war, post-war recovery and European integration of Ukraine” and “The right to a fair trial in the conditions of armed conflict and post-war recovery of the country in terms of the European Convention on Human Rights”.
People’s deputies, foreign experts, representatives of law enforcement and control bodies, as well as the academic community took part in the discussion of the relevant challenges, related to Russian aggression.
Among other things, the subject of discussion with the Chairman of the Ukraine’s Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, Oleg Bondarenko, were aspects of the preparation of the Ukrainian government and expert delegation for the next UN Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Baku in November 2024, taking into account the experience of the participation of our Association’s experts in corresponding events of 2022 and 2023.
In his own speech, Professor Babin drew attention to the practice of Ukrainian law enforcement investigating cases of ecocide, particularly on the Crimean examples, and outlined the aggressor’s provocation attempts with manipulation of relevant “ecological issues.” The Association’s expert also emphasized the need to strengthen the interaction of the Ukrainian scientific and public environment with UN structures, regarding human rights in the context of countering the aggressor’s large-scale encroachments on the environment.
